Transformers News: The Transformers Original G1 Cartoon Turns 35

35 years ago today the original 1984 The Transformers cartoon debuted. For many fans of the Transformers their love is rooted in the original series. For all its charming and at times humorous animation flaws, it brought the Transformers into the homes of children all over the world whether they had the toys or not.

It was the voice of Peter Cullen that breathed more life into the character of Optimus Prime than any depiction in the comic books or other media. So too for Frank Welker's sinister gravelly depiction of the emperor of destruction himself, the original Megatron. Welker also provided one of the most recognizable voices in all of Transformers history providing the dialogue for the monotone master of sonics Soundwave. Peter Cullen also pulled the iconic Southern drawl of Ironhide out of his voice actor's tool box making it a staple of the character. The legendary Chris Latta who lent his utterly unique shrill scream not just to Cobra Commander, but the Decepticon lord of the skies Starscream. He also voiced Wheeljack and even Sparkplug, but it was his voice that drove home Starscream's slippery character more than any line of dialogue written for him, and that essence has carried on throughout all of Starscream's incarnations.

These voices very much made the characters, and have resonated through all the generations to the point where the fan cry out for Welker and Cullen to be in the live action movies was so great even the steely Michael Bay crumbled and cast them. Maybe not initially for Megatron but hey, nobody's perfect. Even when we read these characters, it is often we hear these voices, or other actors emulating these originals, in our heads.

It was through the original cartoon that life was also breathed into the toy line. Although the comics were always there, and of course the fan bible the original tech specs would be rubber banded together and safely kept in a drawer for hardcore fans to reference, the original cartoon depicted the characters in motion and action, able to interact and battle their foes in ways that the toys made more challenging with their highly limited articulation.

35 long, and yet so very short years have passed since the original cartoon aired. It spawned multiple other cartoon series, to where we now all expect and wonder as fans when and what the next Transformers cartoon will be, will it have Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, who will they include, who will voice whom, and so on. Cartoons and comic books and Transformers have always been the undefeatable unavoidable undeniable trifecta of fun for fans of these noble and nefarious robots in disguise. And as Transformers Cyberverse enters its second season, and with a new Transformers War for Cybertron Siege series on the way, it seems the animated future of the Transformers is looking brighter than ever.

Mere days after the previous news of the sudden passing of voice actor Michael Lindsay comes the unfortunate news of voice actor Robert Axelrod having passed away yesterday, September 7, 2019, at the age of 70. This news comes to us from Facebook of Mobile Monicker Productions, who represented Axelrod for his many convention appearances. Axelrod is best known for having provided the voices of Lord Zedd, Finster, and other monsters on Power Rangers, as well as several English dub anime voice roles, such as Wizardmon, Vademon, Armadillomon, Ankylomon, and Shakkoumon (w/ Dave Mallow) on Digimon, and Rico on Robotech. He also voiced Marvel Comics character Microchip in the Punisher episodes of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and appeared in live action on an episode of Family Matters where he played a Paul McCartney lookalike.

For Transformers, he was the voice of Movor in the 2001 Transformers: Robots in Disguise cartoon. One of the Decepticon Commandos, Movor was the space shuttle member who could form an arm or leg for the combiner Ruination. He was also one of the very few Commandos to star in his own spotlight episode, "Attack from Outer Space", which had the misfortune of being one of the three episodes that was banned from ever airing on TV in the United States due to sensitivities from the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Rest in peace, Mr. Axelrod. Your performances were a treasure to behold.

While Burger King has offered a promotional set of toys for the new Transformers: Cyberverse Toys based on the new Spark Armor line here in the US, thanks to TFW2005 Boards member prime roller, we now know that other parts of the world have some new Transformers Cyberverse Power Of The Spark Toys, coming from McDonald's instead.

A McDonald’s display in Taiwan revealed a new set of Transformers Cyberverse toys of Optimus Prime, Jetfire, Bumblebee, Grimlock, Prowl, Megatron, Starscream and Shockwave that are inspired by the Spark Armor gimmick. Each figure, like in the main line, comes with a little vehicle that can separate into parts that can be attached to the figure as weapons or armor. These toys do not transform, but the last fast food toys that actually did were way back in 2008, so there's no surprise here.

It is still unknown whether these toys will be offered in the US, but these figures have also been spotted in Peru, Japan, and India too.

Keep your scanners peeled for any more sightings, and always post your findings in the Sightings thread. As always, stay tuned with Seibertron.com for more updates.

Posted to the official Transformers YouTube and thanks to a head's up from fellow Seibertronians D-Maximal_Primal and Sabrblade we've learned the new trailer for Season 2 of Transformers: Cyberverse: Power of the Spark is now on line! This trailer is jam packed full of details of the upcoming season and filled with new characters to speculate on.

Here's the official synopsis:

"In Season 2 of Transformers Cyberverse the Autobots are closer than ever to finding the Allspark, but completing their quest will be tougher than they could have imagined. They'll face new enemies and be challenged by Earth's roughest terrain, and along the way they'll discover that, when near the Allspark, they are imbued with incredible new powers."

And out of all the quick cut character glimpses in there we have confirmation that the flying creatures are in fact a call back to the classic Transformers Beast Wars character Skyhammer! This comes from a post to Cyberverse story editor Randolph Hurst's Twitter:
"An exciting new #CYBERVERSE Season 2 trailer! Some quick glimpses of stuff we didn't think you would see yet. Who would put Air Hammers into a #TRANSFORMERS animated show? That's just crazy!"

Then thanks to Seibertronian ZeeDust we have word the first six episodes are currently available to at least some of our audiences with access to certain cable TV providers offering On Demand Cartoon Network programming. Check your local provider to see if you can get a peek ahead of the rest of us.

So far the first two episodes can be found on line through the Cartoon Network app with the season set to officially debut September 7th.

Who do you spot in the trailers? Are you Beast Wars fans loving the call back? And was that a Titan in there? Share your thoughts on these episodes in the forum and tell us what you see.

As always stay tuned to Seibertron for the ultimate in Transformers news!

While the second season of Transformers Cyberverse has already started airing in other countries, it wasn't until yesterday, August 30th, that the first episode of season 2, "Sea of Tranquility" was put up on the Cartoon Network website and app! The episode was planned to air on September 7th on the Cartoon Network television channel, and just like season 1, the episode goes up on the website in two parts, just separated with bland title cards. Part 1 can be found here and part 2 can be found here.
