An interesting thing to note is that Soundwave's trunk contained a pretty spiffy soundsystem, which likely would have opened as his chest in robot mode.

Update:
These unused pictures of Classics Soundwave, are actually not new. Although many of our fans have never seen them before, Don Figueroa submitted these art pieces years ago, according to Unicron.com, which they reported in December 2007. Thanks to our Seibertron.com sleuths for uncovering the truth and finding this fan colored art over at DiviantArt.com.

But I can see why they did that, so the minions can pop out of the trunk.
I prefer the nostalgic design of ML Soundwave however... I really do need to get him.

so what if its out dated i would buy it over anything else they made him into
and why don't they do a classics reflector ?

Soundwave is in dire need of a permanent alt mode upgrade. We can't keep hanging on to a casette player forever. In a few generations very few people will even remember casettes at all. I very much like the pictures of Soundwave I have seen as a military communications vehicle and would love for that be the inspiration for his future.

Agreed.

You hit the nail right on the head. Soundwave needs a new, long term alt mode. Casettes are really, really old school and are all but forgotten and the boom box designs just aren't relavent any more.
I grew up with and love the old design but we've got to get past the whole retro thing. Let's save the casette player for the Encore releases and get on with it.
We've seen him as a jet which was just OK to me, and now as a Scion-esque car in TFA which IMO is pretty nice. If people aren't feeling these alt. modes, what's next? Maybe the Movie will get it right and give us a proper alt mode for his future uses.

OK they did have to clean it up for me, but I started it, well the pic got erased cos it was now fanart, I then found it on unicron.com
http://www.unicron.com/news_item/1132/ (have a look at Don's Vector Prime!)
Then it got erased again, cos Classics_Soundwave is better then Doncept_Swave, so I upped it again and wow it's still there!

I do, but each time I put that on Teletraan they erase it, now they even complained cos if it.

I agree with others that Soundwave needs to be updated to something, and I think a communications vehicle is the way forward.

It's a nice design if you wanted to make Soundwave into a car.

I don't think it's Alternators, Alternators was all about real licensed cars, and that SUV looks like it's made up.

Actually if you look hard enough you'll find that they still do make cassette players. Granted, most of them play disks and only play cassettes as a secondary feature but nevertheless they still have the tape deck door that most of us find crucial to the Soundwave design.

Bold, italicized and enlarged to underscore my point: they're not commonplace anymore. Used to be just about anyplace you go someone's got a double-deck boom box; nowadays you have better access to a museum with dinosaur skeletons in it than you do a working tape deck. In fact, I haven't been to a single music store lately that has an abundance of cassettes; they're all going electronic now.
As for the whole 'big door on the chest' angle...well, duh. Why do you suppose the van alt-mode was probably brought up to begin with?
