....On that nore, it's a good thing it's coming out on HD-DVD, because we were planning on getting a HD-DVD drive for our 360 as a family christmas present....& now I'll have something killer to watch on it.

Yeah that is complete bullshit on Paramounts part.
Looks like Paramount lost a bit o' business. As much as I liked Transformers, I'm not gonna go out and buy an HDTV just so I can watch it. Screw that noise.

I was pissed off too at first, but I read it a couple more times, to clear things up.

Or they could be only releasing it as a HD-DVD/DVD combo disc which would reduce costs as there would be no need to make a second master copy and they could charge more for the "convenience".

Where does it actually say it's on both DVD & HD? Or hint at it. I only skim read it but I could find it anywhere.

It's like the Games of Deception boxset all over again.

They state that for Next-Gen Media their exclusive would be HDDVD. They said nothing about abandoning normal DVD. They only state their exclusivity for NextGen.

Oh, cool ^^ thats good.
Maybe that should be more obvious in the first post or title...

So basically:
HDDVD: Check
DVD: Check
BluRay: Not a chance in hell.

And I hope it's a combo disc with special features for both sides unlike 300. I bought 300 as an insurance in case HD-DVD wins out and even if it loses, I could still use the regular DVD side. Except only the movie and not the special features is on the regular DVD side.

Doubtful. the X-box 360's HD DVD player is an add-on...it's not built into the system. People can play an X-box just fine without one, so I don't see how that could make people flock to the 360 when I'm sure there are several HD-DVD players that are under the $600+ it would cost to get a 360+ HD drive.Rodimist wrote:Sounds like yet another pathetic ploy to get people to buy an X-Box 360. True, I may be a little bitter cuz I wanted to see it in 1080p. DVD is fine (and cheeper).

Considering the lead that Blue Ray has I'm just gonna wait this one out till/if Blue Ray finally fully wins out and it gets Retroactively released on Blue Ray. Course I get no use out of HD movies right now anyway even though I do have a PS3, since I don't have it hooked up to a display with HDCP. So HD movies would get downscaled to 480 anyway.
Guess this puts getting a 37-42" HDTV onto the back burner for a while.

This was covered a while back.
It will be on both standard and HD format discs.
A single disc with commentary only will be available.
A 2-Disc special edition with features out the wazoo will be available.
A Next-Gen (HD-DVD now, instead of both) will be available.
No one except Blu-Ray enthusiasts are getting burned here, so anyone like me who has an older DVD player has no worries.

Nemesis Cyberplex wrote:Ha Ha, Take THAT sony & your precious blu-ray!!!
Actually, both systems can fry in the obscurity of hell as far as I'm concerned. The PS3 is struggling in the market due to the RIDICULOUS price that Sony imposed on the POS b/c of the blu ray garbage that I couldn't give two fukz about.
Looks like DW, PM, etc are using the same heavy handed tactics to force people into supporting ridiculously overpriced machines in order to get their basic fix for entertainment...
I can't wait for this little arrogant marketing tactic to bite them in the asses.
Now to sit back and watch the profits fall as such a widely loved property becomes only available to a select few rather than the BROAD market.
Autobot032, I hope you're right, but the article(s) I've read have said squat about standard format, so I'm not holding my breath until I see some sort of official release saying otherwise.

but I do have a time machine which I use frequently to determine outcomes for potential failures. Quickly now, get the Beta Max up to 88 mph!

the lowering in price of hd-dvd's coupled with this news seems to bring them equal again. the short term winners in the end will be the hw manufactures who trot out dual format players. funnily enough - format wars is one form of competition which does not always benefit the consumer

*sigh* If you're going to bash a type of technology you might want to actually know what you're talking about instead of using baseless and vague insults such as "HD-DVD only is gay."
Both Blue Ray and HD-DVD can display HD content in up to a 1080p resolution.

Still, I have to say it's a stupid move on there part. Not everyone has HD yet, more people don't than do, so go ahead, enjoy lossing your money on sales and rental opertunities.
I'm sure BlockBuster, and Netflix won't be picking up as many copies as normal since it's released on a limited format.
Also, get ready to pay alot for this, as I'm sure they'll try to recoupe those losses on you!
I will, get this set, but I'm also gonna pick up a bootleg out of spite now!

dabattousai wrote:And when Blu-Ray wins the medal of being the next format after DVD, what will they do then?
And who's to say Blu-Ray is going to beat HD-DVD? Or regular DVD for that matter? Just because the quality is superior doesn't mean either one will win. See Betamax vs VHS wars. Betamax had better quality but people had to buy new playeys to use it and it didn't have as much tape length as VHS.
While you don't have the tape length problem you do have the cost problem, everyone has DVD players already and the HD and Blu-Ray players and discs cost more.

ShGarland_1383 wrote:Can HD-DVD players be used with normal televisions, or do they require HD-TVs?
As far as I know, they can be used with normal TVs, but the definition content would definitely degrade in terms of quality. (Obviously.)
Last I checked, they all have: HDMI, Component and Analog outputs. (Older TVs and standard TVs can do Component and Analog.)
Posted by Loki120 on August 20th, 2007 @ 4:23pm CDT
However, I'm still not going to go through the problems of converting my collection yet again. Though I do have an HD tv, regular DVD does just fine for me.
I'm also not suckered into buying a half-grand gaming system because I can play a movie in it.

HDDVD also needs a major exclusive release like this if they are to survive. Since I went with HDDVD, I am glad the went this way. I do feel some pity for BluRay adopters.

Well... the high-definition format war just got more confusing for consumers, and you can thank the hubris of the folks at Microsoft for it. Their HD-DVD format (because I'm sorry, can anyone really say it still belongs to Toshiba at this point?) badly needed a shot in the arm going into the holiday season, and just got it thanks to suitcases full of cash from the Microsoft camp. You ready for this? Here it is:
Microsoft has paid DreamWorks and Paramount so much money that they've decided to join Universal in the HD-DVD exclusive camp. No kidding.
None of the participants in this deal are willing to openly disclose just how MUCH money was exchanged, but the L.A. Weekly is reporting (based in part on a confidential report from media analysis firm Pali Research) that it was in the neighborhood of $50 million in "promotional considerations" for Paramount and $100 million for DreamWorks. I'm sure they're also getting lots of free or discounted VC-1 compression and HDi authoring services, along with prime placement on Xbox Live too. Is anyone else just disgusted by Microsoft's naked, shameless financial influence in this thing? That Hollywood is a greedy place should be obvious to all by now, if it wasn't already. The HD-DVD format can't win any other way than for Microsoft to PAY studios off to stay exclusive. And then they have the balls to claim the Blu-ray Disc camp is involved in antitrust violations. Wow.
Interesting, eh?
Further more in the article there is an official announcement copy from Paramount as well as some of this:
"Paramount Home Entertainment will issue new releases day and date as well as catalog titles exclusively on HD DVD. Today's announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format."
How do you like THEM apples? Not exclusive to either format? Spielberg's decided his first film on high-def disc is coming out on Blu-ray Disc only. So what do Paramount and DreamWorks do? They bury that little factoid at the tail end of their press release. Nice. Okay, Spielberg hasn't made any kind of public statements to that effect that he supports only Blu-ray. But why then isn't Universal able to release any of his films on HD-DVD? Why then does this deal with Paramount and DreamWorks NOT include Spielberg titles? Because Spielberg wouldn't allow it is the only thing that makes any sense.
