ive been waiting decades for someone to do a story on the "superpowered" transformer so got a real kick out of the xmen like comparisons going on here.
i havent got the book yet , and im probably WAAAAY off base, but the more i look at it the more i think the senator is ultra magnus .
simply because the change in character from friendly to hard ass would seem a natural progression for the guy and add an aditional layer to the prime magnus relationship that goes beyond "brothers"
class stuff.

I mean, I do enjoy the fact that with Drift, Wheelie and Orion Pax (and to an extent the Nails), the writers are acknowledging and exploring the world beyond Earth and Cybertron, but I'd rather they avoided the Quintesson solution, or variations of it.
I'm still in awe at the final page.
