This looks to be taken from a Japanese hobby magazine, such as Figure King or Hobby Japan, but it is currently unknown what the exact original source of the image is. Machine translation on the image's text also suggests that this will scale more appropriately with Autobot Cars such as Prowl or Sideswipe than with the original Rodimus Prime.
Ready for a proper Hot Rod? Hoping this doesn't have the several quality control issues the original versions of MP-9 had? Ready for some Decepticons and giving a long sigh at this news? Hot Rod was originally released in early 2011 in Japan by Takara Tomy as MP-9, in a mold also intended to serve as Rodimus Prime. Could we be getting a new version soon? The image suggesting so is mirrored below.

I could see them borrowing some engineering, but those silhouette's proportions would make me skeptical of an extensive remold. Still an interesting thought, Hot Rod does transform very similarlyomega666 wrote:I wonder if it will be a remolding of the Lambor mold.

I'll gladly take an all-new MP Rodimus! MP-09 Rodimus was one of the worst Transformers to come out. He should've been Rodimus or he should've been Rodimus Convoy. Trying to do both just sacrificed the entire toy ... so much so that Rodimus Convoy's vehicle mode had more in common with a Pretender vehicle than the original Rodimus. This picture says it all:

A new MP Rodimus in the same size class as the other Autobot cars will be perfect.

Don't panic Will. This is just an extra acessory like OP's trailer. The real vehicle mode is rather this:
And MP-09 is a 2.5changer. Meaning, he got his vehicle mode, plus 2 robot modes.
"Kid" Hot-Rod and Rodimus Prime.
It's still a horrible, horrible transformers. Still, if you can endure MP Megs, I guess you would still enjoy it if you can find it for cheap.

Hear hear! I mean, my G1 and eHobby Galvatrons scale fine with the modern MPs, but they're just a bit clunky looking.
I hope this new MP turns out well. MP-9 was just a clusterbomb of problems. Just trying to do too much with one figure.
Of course, since we're getting Ironhide, the MP I'm really anticipating is Ratchet. G1 Ratchet was the very first Transformer I ever had, alongside Mixmaster, and I'm anticipating coming full-circle.

MP-10 was made to bring the scale down, but when that was made it was shown to be more in scale with MP-09, so there's really no immediate need for a redo, like there is with MP-05. I don't pretend to call the shots for TT, but I'd rather see either another stab at Megatron, or new characters before revisiting Hot Rod. That's my two cents, and before people take me apart, I know that's exactly what they're worth.
MP-10 was made in scale with MP-9, but as Rodimus Prime.
This new figure represents Hot Rod. Same size as the other Autobot cars. And likely newer and better engineering than MP-9.
I agree that a new MP Megatron is long overdo. imo Hasui needs to be the one to do it.

I get that this is Hot Rod, not Rodimus Prime, but why bother getting a Hot Rod into scale with characters like Prowl that he never shared screen time with. Once Blurr and Kup are made, then worry about his scale. It's just making the wait time for Jazz, Brawn, Sunstreaker, and the rest of the Ark crew longer. Maybe there's licensing issues going on behind the scenes perhaps?

The 30th anniversary of TFTM is coming up, and Hot Rod was the star, perhaps that was a factor in their decision-making.

Well we do have both Magnus and Daniel in exosuit now. It's not like there's absolutely no other season 3/movie characters in MP now like when the original Rodimus came out. And who knows maybe there planning to do Galvatron next year too, it's not like they only can make 2 MPs a year. Were (hopefully) having 4 come out this year.

But wasnt he Rodimus Prime for the most part when he was hanging around with Blurr, Magnus and crew? So technically this figure is only there for the scale found in the film until the end. And he does have a specific scale with Optimus since he was there at the moment of his deth, thats probabl the scale they are tryingto replicate.
And DecepticonFinishline, this scale logic above shows that the previous Rodimus Prime is not irrelevant.

First, you can count on Takara to milk that new mold with as many repaints as possible. So a Black Rodimus is most guaranteed. You'll see it mosey down the streets, pants down his ancles and listening to gansta rap for sure!
Also, I don't think they'll redo Grimlock. He's pretty much perfect and have even be recently re-issued.

How do you figure? If Hot Rod is scaled to standard car size (let's assume for the sake of argument that in the movie he's the same size as Prowl, Sideswipe, etc) then he is scaled to MP Optimus, who is scaled to MP Ultra Magnus.

This time around, I think they would release Rodimus Prime as his own mold. Maybe a 150-200$ leader sized bot. Also, the "trailer" part may not separate, or just a very small part would come off à la MP Ironhide as a G1 hommage.
Hot Rod will only be his own car-sized mold for sure. Having a separate "trailer" accessory would make no sense because the bot would never be Rodimus Prime. Unless said trailer partform as an armor upgrade to make Hot Rod into Rodimus Prime. Maybe a 3p company would do it, but I don't think Takara would go that route.

Exactly! I can't understand the logic behind re-doing a character because "it could be done better" ahead of unique Decepticon characters.
Hell, if you want to re-do a character, re-do the fucking seekers and give them coneheads! GUARANTEED MONEY FOR LESS DESIGN TIME!

It would be amazing though if they made Hot Rod a car sized bot, and then he also has that trailer, which you can combine with him, and make him Optimus MP sized. I don't think that would happen, but it would be brilliant.

It'd be a good start. Insecticons don't have to be too big either, they could probably sell them as a boxset (as should Reflector)

They never stood a chance, but the Autobots completely lost Cybertron by 2005. That, and the Decepticons had more, bigger and better combiners. I think the Autobot's greater number of mini-bots didn't really do all that much for them.
Back to the topic of MPs- I really thought the gold MP-5 release with Reflector was either signaling that we would soon get either a new Megatron or an MP Reflector. Either way would have been cool. This.... not so much.
