Why does Japan always get the good stuff? Damn you Hasbro for being cheap!!!

You should damn retailers for refusing to sell more expensive/intricately painted figures, and damn parents for not being able to afford $40 deluxes, and collectors for not buying more. If Hasbro could get away with charging more to provide more paint apps, they would.

Just looking at ROTF Sideswipe today, I can't imagine it looking any good without silver paint.

They had no problem painting RoTF Sideswipe silver and selling him for 10-13 bucks at retailers.

If this Sideswipe really is silver, it looks like I'll be importing him.
It's not. We've got all the new DOTM toys here at Toys 'R' Us in Okayama (including the Takara-exclusive Optimus Prime), and Sideswipe is as ugly and unpainted as the Hasbro release.
Don't believe the hype.

Can you post some pics?
I can get in touch with Joel at BBTS and forewarn him when everyone cancels their preorder.

I've seen them in Kobe, and I've seen them in Okayama -- DA-08 Sideswipe is as dull grey as his Hasbro counterpart. Only the stickers on the front and bottom of the package separate the Japanese release from the US version.

Exactly! I was thinking WTH was going on when they would not even paint Sideswipe his characteristic colour. Which to be honest, is one reason I'm sure many of us fell in love with the character. Unless the movie Sideswipe if he's in there has somehow become white. Though why they'd take a step down for his iconic look is beyond me.
It can't be that difficult to paint, unless they decided they wanted to average out the total cost of production as low as they could.
Out of curiosity, did anyone not buy him because he wasn't silver? I know a few here have actually stated they don't mind.

It's a barely altered RotF Chromia:

Barely altered, to homage TF:Prime Arcee! I love homages!

Oh well. No huge importing prices for me!

An homage to a figure that hasn't been released yet? The Prime definition of a Time Paradox.

Yes, it's badass. It's all there: the richer blue, the light pink, the white, the blade...

Unpainted Takara DOTM Sideswipe = yet another disappointment with DOTM Deluxes
What crappy looking figure ! I prefer 10x to spend US$50 importing Takara AA-06 Sidearm Sideswipe than US$ 5 on this new DOTM SS.
I reaffirm my original position: only the HA and the Leaders (excluding BB) seem to be worth adding to my collection. From the smaller figures only Voyager Shockwave & Skyhammer look good enough.

You can just barely make it out in the pic. It's the same flat bluish-gray as the domestic.

I'll hold out for any possible repaints (preferably a red "Swerve", you know, Sideswipe's REAL colour).

You would not believe how many ROTF Sideswipes and Sideways I had to look through back at the time of the second movie to find decent specimens that did not have a lot of annoying black marks and scratchs all over their silver paint that I could live with. (OCD for the lose) That's part of the reason I skipped on Sidearms Sidewipe. Horrendous silver painting and the red highlights didn't do it for me.
Granted, I'm not intending to buy DOTM Sideswipe (maybe if I have some extra spare cash at a later date), and am instead holding out for the Walmart exclusive racecar-painted Sidearms Sideswipe as I think he'd make a nice addition next to the other two Wrecker Autobots released so far.

In Japan, Transformers are distributed by TakaraTomy, but for the movie toys, the Japanese releases have been almost complete copies of the domestic package, usually with some stickers, etc. Including Hasbro logos.

Second I had just preordered this guy from BBTS this morning, and at the time there were only 9 left in stock.
Now, I just checked and they are back up to 20.
Guess word is spreading about the lack of decent paint.

Not surprised. So far I see the Takara's and Hasbro's verison (xcept for DA-03 which is VOY OP w/ Trailer) are all the same. Only difference is Takara's manual and extra bio card.
Posted by Pr1meSuspect on May 19th, 2011 @ 7:06pm CDT
I wouldnt consider Takara's version untill I saw a video review, but now that its confirmed the dull grey paint I wouldnt even consider inport.

I believe ! I returned twice the deluxe Sideswipe I bought in a on-line store !
Anyway, I still think DOTM SS looks ugly. I dont' know how successful the DOTM line will be with the kids, but it seems it will be a failure for collectors (adults & teenagers).
