Hi Transformer fans!
Hope everyone had fun at SDCC and enjoyed some of the new figures we have coming!
I have some catching up to do with a bunch of requested Insta posts but wanted to start with our SS86 Commander Ultra Magnus.
Bit of a short post but as I mentioned in our SDCC panel, this figures comes courtesy of the wonderful Tomo san at TT.
We crammed in a bunch of wonderful features and articulation that are standard to the scale and really make this a fun figure to play with.
Hopefully you all have been having fun collecting the Junkions so they can fully rebuild Ultra Magnus after his battle with Galvaron and his Sweeps.
Thanks for all the support and we’ll have more info and posts coming soon.
Thanks!

Sorry, my wording was not accurate to what I was thinking.
Bring my favorite Dinobot, I knew he was in the movie for really short blips of time…
I meant I wish he would’ve been in the movie more and had more of a substantial role.
It was so weird that he’s not there, then you do see him, but then he’s not there again.
I also find it odd that in the scene where the Autobots are getting attacked, Swoop is missing.
Then in that last shot, suddenly Sludge isn’t with them.
I’ve been meaning to post this sooner, but as we’ve talked about characters that could be included in SS86, I went back to the battle scene where you see Perceptor in the mid-ground and Grapple towards the background…
And strangely enough, it’s a Dinobot that runs past in the foreground,
Although overly stout and distorted-looking…

Any Slug is better than the one we got, and bipedal would at least be funny like the corpse ironhide and prowl are

I know that it's just me, but UM does look a bit hokey in bot mode. Also after my recent debacle with a Kup repaint of Dion and how it falls apart so easily I'm not exactly thrilled about a $90 Commander Class having the same pull apart features.

Same feature, different execution. Kup just used pegs while Magnus uses Combiner Wars style locking pegs like we've also seen on Legacy Menasor and Legends God Bomber.

At least the limbs will not pop off on their own, and we will be able to do some CW shenanigans.

Scale. I mean. Combiner Wars Magnus still exists and is likely to go down in price, right? And Kingdom Magnus looks okay in Robot Mode and is probably bang on in terms of height.
It's about a head off. Which is still off, sure. But so is Galvatron. Scale problems are better than they used to be.

Oh, I am laughing all the way to the G1 Autobot shelf! i can't wait to get corpse Ratchet and Brawn once they are hopefully made, so I can have all 4 dying! I can even have corpse Prime from ER around to complete the quintet of the dead!

Once I have the space maybe I'll make a small corpse display with Sparkless Bot, Ghost Starscream, and Dead Prime facing Ectotron. Or maybe not, I dunno .
Two more for the shuttle scene. I guess. I'm over any residual childhood trauma that scene caused me.
Last TF I'm actively looking for in stores is Toxitron, I guess. Not even sure he's been out in Canada.

Do your effects parts plug into Ironhide securely? Mine do not, though I can pull off some poses using gravity and a little friction.
I wish they'd used the Earthrise mold since that had 3mm posts, but I get why they did what they did.

Mine hold fast yes. The middle piece on Prowl does not like to peg into 5mm ports, but otherwise it holds good

I hate the out of scale-ness of Ultra Magnus, but honestly, he's a bit too big even as MP-22. The thing is, people want too much from Ultra Magnus figures...pretty much always - either he has to have a white Prime interior, or has to be able to carry cars like the Powered Convoy toy, or he has to do both.
The way I see it, he has to be a bit bigger to accomodate the more than 40 year old gimmick to assuage all the people who supposed hate the WFC versions because it didn't carry cars. Then, don't even get me started on the ridiculous 3rd party leg extensions to make him taller.
I'm going to get this one (because, well, it's Ultra Magnus and I'm me), but I'll have to live with him being a bit out of scale. I do feel like with Mark and Evan we're slowly getting more and more incorrectly scaled figures, starting with Blaster and coming soon to a toy store near you, an incorrectly "up to Blaster" scaled Soundwave that Maher has mentioned TWICE. I'm aware there is a bit of flexibility in the sizes, but it's like centimeters, not inches.

Scale has normally been inconsistent, though I s'pose for a series touting "screen accuracy" I can see fans at least hoping he'd match the size shown in the good ol' 80's film.
(I'm not a scale nut myself, BUT this bigger UM with articulated fingers means he can happily grasp, say, the NewAge Constructicons to reference that classic scene where they're teeny tiny!)

if so then I can understand some people's want for this to be translated into toy form. Since I wouldn't even be utilizing this feature it IMO would be a waste to pay extra to have it. Which is why I'm perfectly content with Kingdom UM and see no reason to "upgrade" if you will. I'm happy for anyone who needs this Ultimate Ultra Magnus though! It's nice to have options to suit various collecting needs/wants.

But in the grand scheme, with what I consider such a substantial imrovement, it’s by no means a deal-breaker, and I would assume this would be the case for many.
If someone isn’t completely content with either of the previous versions, and the cost isn’t going to be an issue, why not?
Outside of scale, this is hands-down the best version in terms of appearance. Of both modes.
Here’s a thought I’ve had.
There’s rumor of a new leader class Springer, right?
Say he ends up being slightly taller than the most recent Prime figures…
Well it seems likely that a new Prime is bound to happen in the next couple years.
So if UM, Springer (who is supposed to be as big as Prime), and Optimus all get slightly larger figures, I still see that working fine with all of the other figures of characters that are supposed to be smaller than those 3. Compared to them, the minibots will appear smaller and probably more in scale.
The same can be said if Soundwave gets a slightly larger figure.
Then to follow suit of these larger figures, the next Megatron would also be slightly increased in size.

Except the mini-bots are in cartoon scale now. They won't look "more right" if Soundwave, Optimus and Megatron get bigger, they just may not look "wrong."

The current scales don’t bother me, but if you look at scale charts, the minibots are bigger than they should be in figure form. At least most of them, and it is a substantial difference from what we have with these toys.

Damn.
Still, I do have a scrap CW torso on hand so I can create 4 adapters and make my Magnus "Combiner" regardless.
Compared to what I often show in my sig, making combiner adapters will be an easy task.

And that’s the opposite of a complaint.
If the conversion is quick and easy, imo that’s a pro x 100.
To think that could mean fewer joints that end up floppy, less chances of stress marks, and at least somewhat of an increased chance he’ll be fun to transform, in turn meaning he’ll be transformed more often.
Usually that wouldn’t matter to me…. But when paying $85+, that factors in more.
All this to say, I never loved this character, but this figure seems to be very, very on point.
I do think it’s fair to say, especially as a Commander Class figure, this is going to legitimately earn the label of being a mini masterpiece.

Till-all-R1 wrote:I wouldn't be opposed to a new Soundwave that's on par with Blaster. I'm not really interested in a new taller Prime or Springer even if it might scale better with the minibots, since in reality Prime should be another 2-3" taller to scale better with BB. Problem is once you do that pretty much all the Bots need to be resized/rescaled and I'm not interested in replacing everything I just spent the last three years acquiring.
That was part of my point—
Taller, bigger characters could stand to be so, and it wouldn’t then require that every smaller bot is redone at a slightly larger size.
Again, I really appreciate every newer minibot being a deluxe, because it helps make each of those figures better, probably in multiple regards.
But if the largest bots are just slightly bigger, it actually aids in the overall scheme of scale amongst these figures.
I initially thought increasing the larger characters would make some of the voyagers too small, but I really don’t think that’s the case.
From what I’ve seen, Blaster, Inferno, Grapple, Trailbreaker, and even Astrotrain and Blitzwing are all shorter than OP and Megatron.
In fact, in terms of scale, I think a new OP is necessary; he’s too small compared to the Dinobots.
Which is why I was so against Swoop being a voyager.

Assuming they're all compatible. But if they are, alternatively, you can make a massive combiner with Magnus at the center and Voyager limbs. Heck you could have entire combiners with just one arm missing attached to Magnus and really have a combiner made out of combiners like was talked about in the "figures that wont be made" topic recently.

And once you do tat you also need to adjust some of the midsize cars because currently they are the ones that are no longer in scale with the new minibots nor are they to scale with the current larger bots.
Check out the portion of the scale chart below.
Notice how Ironhide and Ratchet are at the height of the bottom of Prime’s windshield.
The mid-sized cars like Wheeljack, Sunstreaker, Prowl, etc. are maybe, maybe just above Prime’s waist.
In the lower right section, you can see Inferno and Grapple are over a head shorter than Prime…
The only non-Dinobot Autobot that’s close to OP is Blaster.
And he’s not on this specific chart image, but I believe Springer is one of the few who is as tall as Prime.
As far as I knew, the leaders of the combiners were the others, but I’m not exactly sure of that.
Posted by sol magnus on August 12th, 2023 @ 10:05pm CDT
Actually, I found the full chart and he's not even lined up right on the sheet they literally copy/pasted them on. He looks to be about the same size as Prime on the sheet, even though he definitely was shoulder height on the show. Soundwave, though is the correct size, even on the scale guide.
If this is what they used, though, then I guess I have to recant because that's what's on the paper.

Slag reared back on his hind legs as they were being attacked…
It’s no different than when you’d see an elephant do the same thing.
I don’t think it would be as realistic for a brontosaurus to do this just because of their overall body mass.
But in the grand scheme, who cares?
I also don’t think any of them ran off on their hind legs…
It’s called perspective;
their front legs are higher in the composition because they’re supposed to be further away.
In the still above, Slag is just close to Grimlock; I don’t believe they’re actually embracing each other;
They’re just really close in proximity.
All the movement in this scene is supposed to add to the tension and anxiousness of being attacked when the Decepticons aren’t anywhere in the frame.
I also think the running off was part of the plot and getting the Autobots to the shuttles;
otherwise, think about it—
The Dinobots are such badasses, I think they would’ve preferred to hold their ground and fight.
