Greetings Seibertronians! Fellow Seibertron user, Hokutron, has let us know that fellow Seibertron user, and YouTube toy reviewer, PrimeVsPrime, has now given us our first English language review of Takara Tomy's highly anticipated, Transformers Generations Selects Super Megatron!

This figure is a heavy retool of Titans Returns Voyager Class Galvatron. Super Megatron is the first toy version of the character who debuted in the story pages of the Battlestars: Return of Convoy portion of the Japanese Generation 1 line, following on from Transformers Zone. This was the toyline that gave us the original Star Convoy toy (that came with hot rod Micromaster) and the Sky Garry toy.

We have embedded the review below for your convenience:

What do you think of this toy? Are you awaiting his arrival at your door? Let us know in the Energon Pub and stay tuned to Seibertron for all the latest news and reviews!

Why would this ever be a thing?

Yeagh mainly a joke but I could see them having retooling for pilot compartments and a full on Diaclone crossover as it would probably fit in well wth the current Takara Diaclones. Star Convoy was super lazy so I'm not expecting full on retooling into Dinoking but if it is, it will be nice to see.

How was Star Convoy super lazy? He wasn't completely G1 accurate, but his retooling was pretty extensive, especially on the smaller figure.

Curious to see what we end up with.

If it's just an improved Volcanicus, good on them, but I have one with an upgrade kit I am happy with, so would probably pass on.

If it's a new character that uses the same head and is improved, I'll be more interested.

By being not evenly remotely accurate to the characters looks or having any key throw backs to the original toy (mini hot rod, tank treads, bonnetted truck, car carriers etc). The smaller figure didnt even need to transform into anything so they could have focused on the truck/trailer -the extensive retooling on the smaller figure was pretty much wasted and misguided just to show Convoy powers up to only kinda look like Star Convoy in bot mode from groin upwards. Even Star convoys chest windows are the wrong shape.

The seacons/god neptune are excellent and really well done but for me there is no use pretending that they don't occasionally drop the ball and it can go either way for a Volcanicus reuse.

Another thing to consider is that both King Poesidon and God Neptune also had animated appearances in Japan.

OK my prediction:

New Volcanicus figure with a bunch of new parts and tooling to improve the combined mode.
cartoon blue eyes
a pair of massive swords that store on the back, hence the background.

I can't really see this being anything other than a different style of Volcanicus, no other combiner has a head like that and they would not do all that retooling for an existing character and not redo the head

I think you misunderstood what the figure represents and what Takara Tomy was trying to achieve. It isn't really Star Convoy. It's an Optimus Prime/Convoy figure with a Star Convoy-like power up, but not actually Star Convoy. This was made clear in his accompanying comics well before his release. I have a reissue Star Convoy and I think the Selects figure did a fantastic job of capturing his bot mode. It hasn't left my desk since his release.

And no matter how you feel about the figure the work put into it was nothing short of extensive just as it has been with King Poseidon, Super Megatron, and God Neptune (who has further retooling). I don't expect anything less from Volcanicus, it just wouldn't fit their track record.

Rerelease of Volcanicus, either with bright, simple colors to match cartoon, or (less likely) vacuum-chromed parts to match original toys. For anything else, a head retool would be certain.,

I wasn't quite sold on Star Convoy either, despite the extensive retooling. Not every exclusive will work for every person. *shrug*

Super Megatron seems to be better as that character. It just seems like it improves that mold so, so much. And I guess I like his look more overall.

I can only imagine the Dinobots will be remade into Dinoking. Maybe they can work some magic on the Grimlock mold to make it worthwhile. Who knows?

To those who keep saying Dinoking / Monstructor...

This is Dinoking's head:

Image

This is Monstructor's head:

Image

Yes, these were best pics I could find of their faces, but they both still show that they each have two eyes and an exposed nose and mouth.

And this is the head they are using:

Image

A visor, no visible nose, and an enclosed mouthplate.

Takara wouldn't be using this head if they were doing either Dinoking or Monstructor. Takara is too traditionalist and media-faithful to do that. If they were to do either Dinoking or Monstructor, they would darn well make sure that the toy looked like how Dinoking or Monstructor is supposed to look, exposed face and all.

Yet, we can see that they are keeping the Volcanicus head with no tooling changes, so whatever it is they are doing will have a face like Volcanicus's.

Since we're tossing around wild speculation, maybe it's G2 styled Dinobots?

I guess Dinoking's head is pretty different.

I agree with this. But again, them also being :TAKARATOMY: .

1 NONE of their selects releases have been "lazy". Some might argue God Neptune, but that is just an easy recolor, and faithful to the original.

2. Concepts like G2 and SG are barely known in Japan and have little if any presence, they would not be going that route either.

3. I highly doubt this will be a straight up Volcanicus re-release, or even some sort of "improved" Volcanicus. I'm betting that similiar to how they took Victorion and made her a completely new character (Megatronia) , TT will do the same with the PotP Dinobots, or at least Grimlock. Make him a Brand New character various beast styled limbs perhaps using a mix of Dinobots and Terrorcons?

I'm gonna have to say this is incorrect. SG has proven to be a fun concept over there. Did you forget that that Gridman show was basically a Shattered Glass as human-formers anime?

I'm not certain on G2, but I think saying SG is a barely known thing there isn't entirely accurate.

The fact that one of the contributors of SSSS Gridman happens to be a fan of SG doesn't mean it's wildly popular in Japan, that was a deep cut that most non-TF fans would not even notice. How many SG releases did TT make before Brand Unification? I think only one that was a co-production with eHobby or something like that.

Also notice there was no effort by TT to release CW Superion, Menasor, Bruticus in G2 colors as Hasbro did, and from what I can see (Hasbro had a fire sale on them), they weren't too popular in North America either , and it wasn't like fans in Japan were paying ungoldly prices to import them, like fans in NA were for TT releases prior to Brand Unification.

A lot of SG fanart comes from Japanese fans.

Heck, that e-HOBBY/Fun Pub SG G1 reissue set of Soundwave and Blaster from 2013 happened at all because Japanese fans were asking for their own SG toy releases.

Maybe a another relaunch of Battlebeasts and Volcanicus is the King beast with the legends comics having the battlebeasts pop up a bit/stylised titan masters. I always had Volcanicus use the Trex head, just needed a large fire/wood/water rub symbol on him. Diaclones my first guess, Battlebeasts is my zany guess.

The Selects manga is in a completely different setting from the Legends manga.

While the Legends manga kept the Beastformers the same as they always were, the Selects manga features them as "Beast People" instead, ordinary civilians with no combat ability living in a Earth-like city and wearing normal clothing instead of battle armor, as the Selects manga is set at a point in time eons before the Beast People become the Beastformers.

It's probably Rotorstorm. Others have reported being charged for him while Hubcap has been purportedly pushed back to mid-September.

I suppose if they've reworked it into something stunning, maybe.

Yeah, I got an email about Hubcap and Arcee. This is the second email for Arcee as well, went to 10/10 and now to 10/06.

Ok, this makes sense. As I was going through my orders I noticed Rotostorm was the only one unfulfilled and missing a cancel button. Cool, he and Spinister can have some dog fights ;)^

I have two red Swoops and Grimlock unboxed with Slug, Sludge, and Snarl still carded on my work cabinet. If this is an upgrade, I'll be all over it and will pass on the PotP crew to my bro.

If I may add to speculation, just because they're using Volcanicus' head doesn't mean it's gonna be exclusively Dinobots molds. Remember, Snarl and Swoop were co-tooled with the Terrorcons Sinnertwin and Cutthroat respectively, and Snarl has an unused accessory while Cutthroat has an unused Wildfly head. Also, the Legion Prime Predacons have stood in for the Dinobots multiple times.

Volcanicus had several different reasons for existing, one of which is to ensure THAT never gets mentioned again.

Also, while obviously Dinoking/Monstructor don't have visors, you know who does... ;)

Image

Again, I'm not saying its going to be Dinoking/Monstructor (though I'd be overjoyed for sure), given :TAKARATOMY: reputation, I'm still betting on a new character before anything G2,SG, or just a Volcanicus upgrade.

*edit*, ok so the eye color doesn't match, so yeah I'm still going with New Character. The good thing is that this seems to promote the idea this will be a Heroic combiner, which is needed since the Evil combiners outnumber the Good ones 17 to 15.

 Indeed.

On a slight tangent, although I do recall much discussion back in the day that the Dinobots were the only team that didn't combine. Personally I never thought they needed it. I didn't much care for either take on the concept (I will concede the latter was A LOT better than the former). Yet if HasTak are in the business of making New combiners of old teams. There is still one on the table...

There's actually a few teams that have never had combine modes, as stated, no practical reason to, but I'd take em all in a flash. Insecticons sure...

I've also seen a couple people speculate that we may get a combiner from the BW Neo/ BM Dinobots

WAIT A MINUTE! I just remembered something, and it has to do with King Poseidon aka Piranacon.

You know how the Scramble City Combiners were paired off initially?

- Superion vs. Menasor (aircraft vs. land vehicles)
- Defensor vs. Bruticus (rescue vs. military)
- Computron vs. Abominus (technology vs. fantasy)

Well, where's Piranacon's rival? The Transformers Generations book, the 2001 one in fact, has designs of an unused Dino-themed Scramble City combiner, with the following:

- a T.Rex or similar theropod
- Pteradactyl/Pteranodon/whatever-generic-name-is-used-now
- Styracosaurus
- Dimetrodon
- Ankylosaurus

Easily made with existing Dinobot and Terrorcon molds I'd say, especially with the amount of retooling TakaraTomy has done so far. As for the head, the Dinobots never combined in JP G1 proper, so Volcanicus never existed there.

Well I mentioned a while back that BW Tripredacus would be an easy retool/redeco into a Deluxe Insecticon combiner.

A new BW/BM combiner would be very welcome, regardless of the series. Considering we only ever got two of them, relatively early in the line.

That's the best theory yet, and I'd be all for it.

I know there's no practical reason but I always rivaled Raiden and King Poseidon basically because each combiner had no exact equivalent in it's respective series (I know Raiden battled several combiners, and KP basically fought everyone....but you know what I'm getting at)...

Also I always felt bad The Trainbots were seen in the Intro to MF, but never were in it...

I wonder.

Could Generations Select may be used to reissue some old molds? Especially for some that are absurdly rare and expensive on the second market. They would have their own unique colors, of course.

Like RTS Lugnut, Animated Blackout, Prime Breakdown, and so on. :-?

With TakaraTomy, who knows? Hasbro sticks with molds currently in use and is using Selects more as a compliment to whatever Generations series is running.

Sakamoto did at least sneak POTP Grimlock (and Slash and Elita-1) into the Legends manga at the very last minute. ;)
