The product codes on the two are different. The "vertical gun" version is product code 10851, while the "diagonal gun" version is 10631 according to Stacy. As you can see in our gallery, Seibertron has the "vertical gun" variant:

Maybe I can find a new head to put on it. Or maybe the alternate, 'Buzzsaw' head will just be the one I wait to get.

I think the VTOL mode looks boss and it has some of the nicest MechTech weapons yet.
Very Terminator 2 Hunter Killer-esque.

And just to piss you off
I LOVE THIS LAZERBEAK'S HEAD!!!
it really hits the vibe of ''realistic alien'' across.
i mean really, the movieverse is the only transformers universe where i am convinced the bots are aliens.

It is kind of odd. Also, variant with Preview Prime? I missed that... Do you have a link?

I think the worst part about the weird bug-eyed buzzard head is that from what I can tell in the previews...it isn't even accurate. Wondering what HA SoundWave's LaserBeak will look like, that's the one I plan on getting (plus, it's in scale).
But uh...why exactly are there box variants? What's the point?

i thought variant meant there was an actual difference in the figures themselves like the color or something.

Not for 'packaging' variants.

The prototype pictured in the instructions has a different head. This could mean one of two things: (1) That head will be featured on a future release (Hasbro has revealed new heads this way a few times recently); or (2) that head was based on early concept art and was eventually scrapped (For example, in the picture on the back of the packaging for my movie 1 voyager Megatron, his head is much different than what was eventually in the movie and on the toy).

I'm more surprised that this made front page news here.
I have passed him up a few times now and am holding out for the HA soundwave and hopeing his Lazerbeak is better.

So what? And what you just said about the factories is utter bull. One plant supplies the figures, the other the packaging. Go watch "How It's Made" on Discovery some time.

Add to the fact that the bubble had to be remolded to accommodate each spot..
I found a vertical guns version the other day.
