"War Stories." 2000 years ago, the War of the Three-Fold Spark came to a close, ending an unprecedented era of violence on Cybertron and clearing a way for a bold new era. But two kilocycles is practically nothing to the incredibly long-lived Cybertronians, so what answers can Cyclonus and Pyra Magna find in their past to help them survive the new battles of the present?

Shattered Glass isn't your average Transformers tale... "Shards" is the story of the ongoing battle between the power-hungry Autobot autocrats and the freedom-fighting Decepticon laborers. Join author Danny Lore (James Bond, King in Black: Captain America, Champions) in exploring this fractured alternate universe just before it shatters.

In issue #4, Goldbug, a vicious warlord formerly known as Bumblebee, must become the leader that Optimus Prime failed to be as he fights Decepticons and commands Autobots to extract information from Statscreamm.

The Middle Man
A review of Transformers #33 by Mr.Micromaster

Spoilers Ahead

I found this issue to be a definite step up from the last issue. It was a joy to read rather than a chore. Issue 33 is a simple and humorous read with a seemingly important character moment for a particular character.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers #33 Review
Gobots Rule Transformers Drool

This issue does its job well and manages to squeeze in a smattering of humor. It delivers a story about a rescue mission that also helps set up the next arc of the series. We also get a glimpse of what it is like in occupied Iacon, well at least for the decepticons anyway. This issue like many in the past has a lot of enjoyable character moments. Charger and Firebeast were a personal highlight for me. That is not to say this issue’s plot is perfect though, as the emotional moments in this issue lack depth.

That’s another character for obscure character bingo

The art for this issue is done by Bethany McGuire-Smith. McGuire-Smith illustrates a myriad of emotive faces and competent action scenes. McGuire-Smith’s art is competent and well done and suits this issue well. There are a lot of interesting illustrations in this issue such as bots dancing and wrestling. David Garcia Cruz’s colors compliment McGuire-Smith’s art well. Jake Wood’s lettering is on point as per usual.

Verdict

Join us on the next exciting episode of the Transformers

Overall, this issue is very well rounded with competent art and a nicely structured story. While this issue won’t win any awards, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but there are a few things that hold it back from soaring to above average heights, such as emotional moments that lack feeling.

The World of Swords
A Review of Transformers: King Grimlock #1

Spoiler Free-ish
Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: King Grimlock #1
No OP is fine

Given all the stories about heroes being transported to other worlds, it was only a matter of time before this reached the planet Cybertron and the Transformers, and with today's release of Transformers: King Grimlock #1 we've arrived at this eventuality. On paper, the basic pitch is one hell of a concept, but is the execution any good?

Mostly yes, read on for more.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: King Grimlock #1
But were they fine and young?

If you check out the preview pages for the issue, you'll see a decent amount of robots doing things on Cybertron. While that might seem off given the basic concept here, what's in that preview is all there is to the setup. Following along with Grimlock directly helps provide just the right amount of tonal whiplash which would be expected when jumping from Cybertron to a feudal world of swords and (presumably) sorcery. In other words, the basic setup is simple but effective.

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: King Grimlock #1
What's an anti-sun anyway?

Most of the book follows Grimlock's interactions with human characters in this new world of Menonia he's found himself in, building his character while allowing others to provide the exposition which, for the most part, doesn't feel too forced. Steve Orlando does spend some time with an antagonist that's laden with proper nouns and jargon that border dangerously close to confusing, but I suppose that lends a bit more realism to the context of how it's presented. Realism though, do we need that here?

Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: King Grimlock #1
You see where this is headed

Agustin Padilla handles the line art pretty well throughout, and you may remember this is not a first attempt at a dinobot story, as Padilla also drew plenty during the brief run of Beast Hunters comics. The art shines most in the sections showing humans and more natural-feeling environments, though Grimlock is still ever-present and most of the time his depiction is crisp and scaled appropriately next to those he's interacting with. There's an attempt at a transformation sequence which I appreciate, but it doesn't really land and it left me feeling like an attempt was being made at showing something the artist really didn't want to draw. Again though, the art is usually pretty good and never worse than acceptable through most of the book and a paper copy is probably going to look even better, especially considering it has multiple two-page layouts which shine in only the monthly stapled floppy book format. Someone should really find a way to fix how those read in trade form, especially in the hardbacks, but I digress.

Jeremy Colwell's colors are superb in communicating the tone of the story, as Cybertron's typical hues give way to a natural look that makes Grimlock feel appropriately alien in his new environment. Color is also used well for the presumable villain of the story, or at least it definitely gave him an appropriately over-the-top-in-an-unlikeable-way vibe. Jake M. Wood takes good care on letter duty, with usual Transformers editor David Mariotte handling the reins on that side of things. This section of the review's gone on for so long that some brevity feels required, so as always, remember that you can find all the cover images and full credits for the issue through our Vector Sigma Database page for Transformers: King Grimlock #1.

Verdict
Transformers News: Review of IDW Transformers: King Grimlock #1
Doesn't have to be complicated

Transformers: King Grimlock #1 does exactly what it needs to do - it sets up the story, introduces us to our main characters and begins to define them in the context of the plot's central conflict. It's a quick read for sure, relying on action and spectacle instead of heavy doses of dialogue. First issues are tough for me though because even if the initial taste is good they typically don't have enough to really savor, which is definitely something I felt on this one, but as the picture above this paragraph alludes to I still had a smile on my face by the end. King Grimlock is off to a very good start and is likely to bring some measure of joy to your day if you pick it up, so my recommendation is to do so.

For the score below, this was a rare time that I wanted to do something like a 3¾, but let's avoid breaking the scale and just round up.

Final Score

IDW's 2019 reboot of Transformers continues tomorrow with the latest chapter of the "Lord of Misrule" story as its 33rd issue hits local comic shops and digital marketplaces. Here's what they tell us to expect in the issue:

(W) Brian Ruckley (A) Anna Malkova (CA) Ed Pierre
"Lord of Misrule: Swindle's II". Bumblebee is a lot of things-an ex-Ascenticon spy, a wanted fugitive, and currently working as a go-between for Swindle and Optimus Prime's Autobots. With Swindle and his crew's help, Bumblebee's got a chance to free the long-captive Elita-1 and finally finish his search for justice for Rubble's murder by bringing down Barricade. But when working with criminals, even the best laid plans are destined for trouble.

IDW Publishing has shared a five page preview of this issue, which you can check out below.

A review of Beast Wars issue 6

Light spoilers

Transformers News: Review for IDW Transformers Beast Wars #6

This will be a short review because I tend to be more lengthy when I complain than when I praise or am simply having a good time. And that's what this issue was, a good time. Here is some praise for the writing, it was the very first time that I could read the lines with the characters' voices in my head. Which is something I have been unable to do at times in this comic, which is not ideal when your main goal is to give your readers a familiar setting to expand on.

But as of now, I'm good. This issue serves as a fitting end to the six part introduction arc and is similar to how the second episode of the show wraps up. The stand out this issue was Megatron and the weakest link s Cheetor, not due to characterization but because there is just very little of him in this first arc.

Transformers News: Review for IDW Transformers Beast Wars #6

In terms of art, I am fine with it too. The style is not for everyone but I felt more comfortable with it now than before, for the robot modes. I like the nice sheen given to Primal and I don't mind his almost gundam wing looking helmet. However, the beast modes are still offputting to me, where the exaggerated and angular style works much better for robots and vehicles than it does biological creatures like rats and Dinosaurs (though Burcham's Terrorsaur looks great in both modes).

Transformers News: Review for IDW Transformers Beast Wars #6

My one issue with the art is more about how it does not synch with the words being uttered all the time. For instance, there is a scene where Dinobot says he is facing five Predaccons but there are only 4 in front of him. I actually have no clue who he is referring to in that scene since he himself took one out of commission (in a great callback kind of way) so maybe the error doesn't lie with the art at all but the editing. Someone didn't catch that there were 4 Predacons standing in front of Dinobot in the shot (as there should be). While it may seem I am spending an awful long time on just a few lines, this is where we get the big money shot of the issue and it is the peak of the climax so it definitely sticks out as an error we didn't need. And it could have easily been fixed with changing one word in a few sentences uttered.

Transformers News: Review for IDW Transformers Beast Wars #6

In the end, this was a good issue. Looking back on this first arc, it was not all great, but I did have a lot of fun as a Beast Wars fan with these most recent 2 issues. And I am looking forward to what is next for our heroes and villains.

The first arc in IDW's new Beast Wars series, "Savage Landing", is set to conclude with tomorrow's release of Beast Wars #6. IDW Publishing has provided a five page preview of the book as well as its brief solicitation text which provides some information about what to expect:

(W) Erik Burnham (A/CA) Josh Burcham
"Savage Landing", Part 6! It's a siege on the Axalon as the Predacons attempt to end the Beast Wars before they even begin by bringing down the Maximals and their base! As Megatron and his loyal (?) troops launch their assault, one bot on Optimus Primal's ship decides to put it all on the line to help the others turn the tide.

The series will still be ongoing after this unlike many of IDW's recent Transformers titles which were mini-series, so don't forget to keep Beast Wars on your pull list for issue 7 and beyond! Check out the preview pages below, and as always keep it here at Seibertron.com for all the latest Transformers comic book news.

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 20, 2021) – IDW’s ongoing comic book saga of Transformers, chronicled from the earliest days of the Cybertronian War, will explode this October with the re-introduction of everyone’s favorite down-and-dirty Autobot special missions force in Transformers: Wreckers—Tread & Circuits!

This brand new four-issue miniseries is written by David Mariotte, the co-author of 2020’s hit Transformers vs. The Terminator miniseries; illustrated by Jack Lawrence, the acclaimed artist of the fan-favorite Transformers: Lost Light series; and colored by Candice Han of last year’s Transformers / Back to the Future crossover.

The Tread & Circuits storyline provides a glimpse of life on distant colony worlds, far from the Cybertron war, where good entertainment is hard to find! Fortunately, there’s always the Wreckers, a fearless team of daredevils who broadcast death-defying stunts and action… all as a cover for undercover operations! When the security of the Speedia 500—a literal race for governmental control of a whole world—is threatened, the Wreckers have a new challenge: they must save the most widely-broadcasted event in the galaxy, without getting exposed!

“The Wreckers are an idea that comes from the comics—a team of Autobots willing to do what other Autobots wouldn't, and look cool as heck while doing it," says Mariotte. "Every iteration has been a bit different, and with Jack and Candice on art, this one's going to be a gorgeous new take on who the Wreckers are and how they do what they do best.”

“I was collecting the UK Transformers comic when the first Wreckers story was published in 1986, and it’s so awesome to actually contribute to their legend,” says Lawrence. “The Wreckers have always felt like a pulp adventure team, and I'm excited to bring some of that feeling to these pages.”

“We’re really excited to bring the Wreckers into the IDW Transformers universe. We hope that fans will enjoy taking a break from the war on Cybertron to experience a new mini with spying, racing, wrecking, ruling, and many other fun things,” says editor Riley Farmer.

Transformers: Wreckers—Tread & Circuits #1 will be available with multiple cover variants by a trio of superb Transformers comic artists: Cover A by series artist Jack Lawrence, Cover B by Anna Malkova, and a Retailer Incentive edition featuring art by Nick Roche.

For information on how to acquire copies of Transformers comic books, please contact your local comic shop or visit http://www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Luckily, Nothing Came of It
A Review of Transformers #32 by Mr. Micromaster

Spoilers Ahead
Editor's Note: Yes, for a third time and as you saw in the title above this review is not authored by who its news posting says, but instead by guest reviewer Mr. Micromaster. With that out of the way, let's let him get to it. Thanks, Mr. Micromaster!

For the most part I have been enjoying the Transformers ongoing consistently since issue #20. Unfortunately, I found this issue to be rather disappointing. Personally, I was hoping this issue would reveal more backstory to Exarchon, but alas last issue’s plot twist was honestly disappointing thanks to this issue.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers #32 Review
Action Master Bumble Bee Jetpack not included

Now let’s brighten up this review by talking about the only real positive of this book. That being the art. In the same vein as last issue, Anna Malkova and Angel Hernandez are on art duty for this issue. While Hernandez’s art style is not my favorite, he still delivers a plethora of dynamic action scenes in the beginning half of the book. The latter half of the book is drawn by Malkova who knocks it out of the park. David Garcia Cruz kills it on coloring with his colors working great with both Malkova and Hernandez art. Jake Wood’s lettering as always is done competently and doesn’t interfere with art.

Transformers News: IDW Transformers #32 Review
Cyclonus seeking help to escape this lackluster book

I found the plot to be utterly lacking this issue. I felt like first half of this issue with Jumpstream could have been shortened to two or three pages, as it really didn’t amount to anything all that special or interesting. I feel like these pages would have been better spent exploring the ramifications of Jumpstream “cross overing” or more time with Cyclonus and Provoke. Something I had been enjoying about this series was its nice character moments, but this issue lacked those. I feel like the first half of this issue didn’t allow the rest of it to breathe.

Verdict
Transformers News: IDW Transformers #32 Review
Unfortunately, the audience didn’t.

The plot this issue lacked anything to make it feel special or standout. This issue really felt like I was just reading banal dialogue rather than reading an enticing Transformers story. For me there was maybe one and half interesting moments from this issue. I also found the plot twist at the end of book rather unnecessary and uninteresting. The only saving grace of this issue is the art. Malkova and Hernandez did excellent and dynamic work this issue. I am hoping next issue will better than this one, it definitely sounds more interesting in the solicitation.
