Transformers News: Transformers Not Inducted to 2016 National Toys Hall of Fame, Beaten by D&D, Little People, Swing

2016 National Toy Hall of Fame Inductees Announced Today:
Swing, Dungeons & Dragons, and Fisher-Price Little People

ROCHESTER, New York—One toy takes its riders to new heights, and the other two let the imagination soar. The simple, ancient swing; game-changing Dungeons & Dragons; and the colorful, creative Fisher-Price Little People today became the latest inductees to The Strong’s National Toy Hall of Fame. The honorees were selected from a field of 12 finalists that also included: bubble wrap, Care Bears, Clue, coloring book, Nerf, pinball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Transformers, and Uno.

About swing: Ancient cave drawings in Europe, carved figures from Crete, and ceramic vases from early Greece document instances of humans on swings. In the 1700s, artists of French nobility depicted swinging as an amusement of high-born adults. By the 19th century, industrial processes made ropes and metal chains cheaply and in abundance. And almost anyone with a tree could fashion a swing for children playing in the yards of growing towns and cities. The playground movement of the early 1900s put swings in public spaces for children of nearby apartment buildings and tenements. The parks and playgrounds gave youngsters healthy places to grow and socialize in cities that were becoming increasingly hostile to play. In the mid-20th century, many Americans put freestanding, family-sized swing sets on their own sunny suburban lots. After the 1970s, public concern for children’s safety urged parents to replace the tubular metal sets for smaller swings of woods and resins suited to children of different ages and development.

“Though the equipment has evolved with the centuries, the pleasure children and adults find in swinging has hardly changed at all,” says Curator Patricia Hogan. “Swinging requires physical exertion, muscle coordination, and a rudimentary instinct for, if not understanding of, kinetic energy, inertia, and gravity. It’s the perfect vehicle for outdoor play.”

About Dungeons & Dragons: In the 1970s, serious war game players Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson added the concept of role-playing to the strategy games that they enjoyed and helped launch the modern role-playing genre. With Dungeons & Dragons (published first in 1974), they created an entirely new way to play. Taking inspiration, other firms published similar games built upon related mechanics but often employing different fantasy settings, from historic battlefields to outer space.

In Dungeons & Dragons, players assume the roles of characters that inhabit a world moderated and narrated by a Dungeon Master, a player who explains the action to others and solicits their reactions to the unfolding story. The Dungeon Master’s storytelling skills and the players’ abilities to imagine add enjoyment to the game. Some aspects of the play are familiar, such as dice, but the special dice for Dungeons & Dragons hold up to 20 sides. Rolling them determines each character’s individual strengths, plots their complex interactions, and decides the outcome of their encounters.

“More than any other game, Dungeons & Dragons paved the way for older children and adults to experience imaginative play,” says Curator Nic Ricketts. “It was groundbreaking. And it opened the door for other kinds of table games that borrow many of its unique mechanics. But most importantly, Dungeons & Dragons’ mechanics lent themselves to computer applications, and it had a direct impact on hugely successful electronic games like World of Warcraft.”

About Fisher-Price Little People: Fisher-Price first offered its Little People in a 1959 Safety School Bus pull toy. These stylized figures populated a variety of play sets that encouraged youngsters to explore the world beyond their homes and to imagine themselves at school or the airport, at the service station or the amusement park, and at the zoo or a faraway farm. Fisher-Price made the first Little People of wood and lithographed paper; solid, single-colored wooden bodies followed. Later figures were made of hard plastic. In the 1980s, concerns about the small figures becoming a choking hazard led to the 1991 introduction of a new design for larger diameter Little People known as “Chunky People” or “Chunkies.” By the mid-1990s, the Little People became more people-like with arms, legs, and dimensional faces.

Says Chris Bensch, The Strong’s vice president for collections, “Little People have been a fixture—albeit a small one—in many American playrooms for more than 50 years. More than two billion Little People have been sold since 1959, and they have helped generations of small children imagine big adventures in play sets representing farms, schools, airports, and other fascinating places in their worlds.”

TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS Rolls Out Super-Sized Update For iOS and Android Devices

Command the Biggest Bots in the Universe as Combiners Enter Real-Time Combat Strategy Game

BOULDER, Colo., November 10, 2016 – Hasbro Inc., Backflip Studios and Space Ape Games today released their biggest update yet to the popular real-time combat strategy mobile game TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS, bringing fan-favorite Combiners characters Devastator and Superion from the iconic Transformers universe into TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS. Beloved by fans of Hasbro’s “Transformers Generations Prime Wars Trilogy,” the Combiners will be the most visually stunning and powerfully destructive bots on the battlefield.

Not all bots have the power to combine as these super-sized Combiners are robots formed by teams of five or more designated component bots. The landscape of the battlefield will change as players race to build these new characters and leverage their unique powers and abilities. Along with the new characters, the update will introduce new resources, buildings, and the Combiners themselves in a new campaign based on the first chapter in the Prime Wars Trilogy, Combiner Wars.

“Bringing Combiners into the game was a goal throughout development, and we couldn’t be more excited to have achieved this milestone for Transformers fans,” said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President, Digital Gaming and Corporate Development at Hasbro. “Combiners bring another level of authenticity to the game and a whole new mission for the player to collect, combine and battle at a new level.”

TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS launched in June 2016 topping charts and building a player base of six million downloads. Published by Backflip Studios and developed by Space Ape Games, the game breaks new ground for the genre, pairing authentic Transformers storytelling with fast-paced gameplay, beautiful 3D animation and hundreds of characters with diverse strengths and abilities. The game also features notable storytellers and voice actors from the Transformers franchise, including voice acting from Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, and Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron.

TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS is FREE to download, features in-game purchases, and is available on Android and iOS devices worldwide, except in Mainland China. Please note that a Wi-Fi connection is required to play.

Some much needed positive news for this Sunday via fellow Seibertronian AzT, thought not strictly Transformers related - but still linked to Hasbro - about a new scheme that the company is rolling out to help with empathy education, against bullying and to nurture inclusivity. Be Fearless Be Kind is the latest in a fairly significant streak of child empowerment campaigns from Hasbro, so take a look below and here for more!

Hasbro Launches BE FEARLESS BE KIND, a Philanthropic Initiative to Nurture Empathy and Compassion in Youth, and Help Them Put Kindness into Action

Program Equips Parents, Educators and Youth with Resources to Help Kids Stand Up for Others, Be Inclusive and Take Action When They See a Problem

PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS), a global play and entertainment company, today launched BE FEARLESS BE KIND, its largest philanthropic initiative ever, designed to empower kids to have the empathy, compassion and courage to stand up for others and be inclusive throughout their lives. This initiative builds upon the work that Hasbro and the Hasbro Children's Fund have been doing with generationOn, the youth service division of Points of Light.

"We know the amazing difference kids can make by putting empathy into action through service, and we've seen how that work changes them, giving them confidence and a greater sense of purpose," said Karen Davis, Hasbro's Senior Vice President of Global Philanthropy and Social Impact, and President of the Hasbro Children's Fund. "BE FEARLESS BE KIND features resources, partnerships and campaigns with the common goal of creating a generation of kids who include everyone, appreciate differences and experience the feeling of fulfilment that comes with making a difference."

The core elements of BE FEARLESS BE KIND are dedicated to teaching empathy, putting empathy into action, and celebrating kind kids who serve as positive role models and changemakers.

"We recognize that empathy is a critical social skill that impacts our youth and our world," said Brian Goldner, Hasbro's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Hasbro has always been committed to standing up for children, and we are pleased to be using our resources to help address this important issue."

Teaching Empathy

To help nurture empathy and compassion, parents and adults can access proven tools and resources through an online hub, www.BEFEARLESSBEKIND.com:

The website features a curated toolkit with best-in-class materials developed by Ashoka, the world's largest network of changemakers and social innovators.
A custom series of mindfulness videos offers adults and their children the opportunity to practice meditation focused on inspiring kindness and empathy.
Third-party resources, including book recommendations and articles, provide additional information and inspiration for parents and educators interested in nurturing empathy.

Putting Empathy into Action

As part of the initiative, Hasbro and its partners offer a variety of programs throughout the year to help kids put empathy into action:

The first new program to launch was generationOn's Rules of Kindness campaign, which invited kids and teens to create their own "rules of kindness" and a plan to put them into action. The campaign, which ran September 1 through October 17, inspired more than 110,000 youth from eight countries to share their rules and action plans.
Starting in November, Hasbro and generationOn will be hosting the seventh annual Joy Maker Challenge, encouraging youth to spread joy and kindness to people in need during the holidays. For every kid engaged in service throughout the Joy Maker Challenge between November 21 and December 23, Hasbro will donate a toy or game to Toys for Tots (up to $1 million). To date, more than 950,000 total acts of service have been completed.
Hasbro proudly supports NO BULLY, an evidence-based program that leverages student empathy to prevent and stop bullying in schools and in after-school programs. Hasbro brought this approach to the school district where its corporate headquarters are located in Pawtucket, RI, as well as schools across the US through an innovative AmeriCorps partnership. In addition, Peace Summit projects, designed by NO BULLY and featured on the BE FEARLESS BE KIND website, help educators involve students in reducing bullying in schools and promoting peace.

Two new global partnerships with Special Olympics and Creative Vision's Rock Your World have been established to help develop empathy and compassion in kids around the world:

Special Olympics Unified Schools program facilitates sports and education initiatives of Special Olympics in schools to foster respect and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities; change actions and attitudes among peers without intellectual disabilities; and promote social inclusion for all.
Creative Vision's Rock Your World inspires middle and high school students globally to change their world through the use of media. To date, more than 600,000 students in 25,000 schools have used their free curriculum to make a difference around issues they care about.

Celebrating Kind Kids

BE FEARLESS BE KIND recognizes and celebrates kids who are making a positive difference:

For the past seven years, Hasbro has recognized Hasbro Community Action Heroes who embody empathy, kindness, and leadership as they serve their community through volunteerism. The ten 2016 Heroes, who will be announced on November 1, will receive an educational scholarship in honor of their work.
Through its partnership with the Special Olympics Unified Schools program, Hasbro will also recognize one student in each of the areas where it has US offices: Rhode Island, Seattle, Los Angeles and Miami, with the Hasbro Kindness Award for extraordinary empathetic leadership.

Hasbro employees are also bringing empathy-building activities to the communities where they live and work through Team Hasbro, the company's employee volunteer program, which enjoys an 89 percent participation rate.

Certain statements in this release contain "forward-looking statements" within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. These statements include expectations concerning the Company’s potential performance in the future, including with respect to anticipated future benefits from investments in the Company’s business and strategic efforts to grow the Company’s brand portfolio and content delivery over the longer-term, and the Company’s ability to achieve its other financial and business goals and may be identified by the use of forward-looking words or phrases. The Company's actual actions or results may differ materially from those expected or anticipated in the forward-looking statements due to both known and unknown risks and uncertainties. Specific factors that might cause such a difference include, but are not limited to: (i) the Company's ability to design, develop, produce, manufacture, source and ship products on a timely and cost-effective basis, as well as interest in and purchase of those products by retail customers and consumers in quantities and at prices that will be sufficient to profitably recover the Company’s costs; (ii) downturns in economic conditions affecting the Company’s markets which can negatively impact the Company’s retail customers and consumers, and which can result in lower employment levels, lower consumer disposable income and spending, including lower spending on purchases of the Company’s products; (iii) other factors which can lower discretionary consumer spending, such as higher costs for fuel and food, drops in the value of homes or other consumer assets, and high levels of consumer debt; (iv) potential difficulties or delays the Company may experience in implementing cost savings and efficiency enhancing initiatives; (v) other economic and public health conditions or regulatory changes in the markets in which the Company and its customers and suppliers operate which could create delays or increase the Company’s costs, such as higher commodity prices, labor costs or transportation costs, or outbreaks of disease; (vi) currency fluctuations, including movements in foreign exchange rates, which can lower the Company’s net revenues and earnings, and significantly impact the Company’s costs; (vii) the concentration of the Company's customers, potentially increasing the negative impact to the Company of difficulties experienced by any of the Company’s customers or changes in their purchasing or selling patterns; (viii) consumer interest in and acceptance of the Discovery Family Channel, and programming created by Hasbro Studios, and other factors impacting the financial performance of the network and Hasbro Studios; (ix) the inventory policies of the Company’s retail customers, including retailers’ potential decisions to lower their inventories, even if it results in lost sales, as well as the concentration of the Company's revenues in the second half of the year, which coupled with reliance by retailers on quick response inventory management techniques increases the risk of underproduction of popular items, overproduction of less popular items and failure to achieve compressed shipping schedules; (x) delays, increased costs or difficulties associated with any of our or our partners’ planned digital applications or media initiatives; (xi) work disruptions, which may impact the Company's ability to manufacture or deliver product in a timely and cost-effective manner; (xii) the bankruptcy or other lack of success of one of the Company's significant retailers which could negatively impact the Company's revenues or bad debt exposure; (xiii) the impact of competition on revenues, margins and other aspects of the Company's business, including the ability to offer Company products which consumers choose to buy instead of competitive products, the ability to secure, maintain and renew popular licenses and the ability to attract and retain talented employees; (xiv) concentration of manufacturing for many of the Company’s products in the People’s Republic of China and the associated impact to the Company of social, economic or public health conditions and other factors affecting China, the movement of products into and out of China, the cost of producing products in China and exporting them to other countries; (xv) the risk of product recalls or product liability suits and costs associated with product safety regulations; (xvi) the impact of other market conditions, third party actions or approvals and competition which could reduce demand for the Company’s products or delay or increase the cost of implementation of the Company's programs or alter the Company's actions and reduce actual results; (xvii) the impact of litigation or arbitration decisions or settlement actions; and (xviii) other risks and uncertainties as may be detailed from time to time in the Company's public announcements and Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) filings. The Company undertakes no obligation to make any revisions to the forward-looking statements contained in this release or to update them to reflect events or circumstances occurring after the date of this release.

This press release includes non-GAAP financial measures as defined under SEC rules. Other companies may calculate these measures differently. These non-GAAP financial measures include EBITDA. EBITDA represents net earnings attributable to Hasbro, Inc. excluding net loss attributable to noncontrolling interests, interest expense, income taxes, depreciation and amortization. As required by SEC rules, we have provided reconciliation on the attached schedule of this measure to the most directly comparable GAAP measure. Management believes that EBITDA is one of the appropriate measures for evaluating the operating performance of the Company because it reflects the resources available for strategic opportunities including, among others, to invest in the business, strengthen the balance sheet, and make strategic acquisitions.

The press release also includes certain of the Company’s 2015 cost and expenses, income tax expense, net earnings and diluted earnings per share excluding the impact of the sale of the Company’s manufacturing operations in East Longmeadow, MA and Waterford, Ireland. Management believes that the presentation excluding the impact of the sale better reflects the results of the underlying operations of the Company. In addition, the press release includes the increases in the Company’s International segment and certain region net revenues excluding the impact of changes in exchange rates. The impact of changes in exchange rates is calculated by translating the 2016 local currency revenues at 2015 actual rates and comparing this amount to the 2016 reported revenues. Management believes that the presentation excluding the impact of exchange rate changes provides information that is helpful to an investor’s understanding of the underlying business performance absent exchange rate fluctuations which are beyond the Company’s control. These measures should be considered in addition to, not as a substitute for, or superior to, net earnings or other measures of financial performance prepared in accordance with GAAP as more fully discussed in the Company's financial statements and filings with the SEC. As used herein, "GAAP" refers to accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

We've received a new press release directly from IDW Publishing, concerning their new partnership with comics subscription service ComicBlitz in terms of digital distribution of a number of their titles, including Transformers! You can find out more information about the service below, though it's unclear as to whether this will affect the current deal with ComiXology - more on that as we find out.

IDW PUBLISHING JOINS COMICBLITZ SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE!
The Growing Platform Announces New Premier Publisher and Pricing Structure

San Diego, CA (October 12, 2016) – ComicBlitz, the “All You Can Eat” subscription service, announce a partnership with IDW Publishing, as a digital distributor for the premier comics publisher. Hundreds of comics and graphic novels will be rolling out over the next few months on the platform, starting today with over 125 issues of titles such as Transformers, GI Joe, Star Trek, My Little Pony, Dungeons & Dragons, Locke & Key, The Crow, Angel, Judge Dredd and more. Upcoming titles include 30 Days of Night, Jem and The Holograms, Angry Birds, Skylanders, Samurai Jack, The Maxx, Danger Girl, and even more from the initial wave of titles.

“Partnering with ComicBlitz to make our extensive backlist of titles available to a wider audience is an exciting next step in IDW’s publishing growth,” says IDW Publishing President and COO, Greg Goldstein. “ComicBlitz’s business model is a smart, easy way to discover your new favorite comic and we hope that their subscribers will enjoy what we have to offer.”

“We are proud to have IDW as a partner, and to offer their widely accessible line of books to our readers,” says ComicBlitz co-founder and CEO, Jordan Plosky. “IDW’s diverse line of books are some of the easiest entry points for new readers into the world of comics. We are extremely excited to share them with our readers.”

In conjunction with the release of that content, ComicBlitz is now providing more value than ever for those who sign up. For a limited time, ComicBlitz is lowering the price of their Unlimited Plan from $9.99 to $7.99 per month. For the price of 2 comics, users now have unlimited access to over 4,500 comics and graphic novels at their fingertips.

In addition, ComicBlitz has added an all-new Basic Plan, a low cost entry point for new users! For the price of one new comic, at just $3.99/mo, users have unlimited access to any ten comics of their choosing, as well as access to features like offline reading, bookshelf usage, rating, reviewing, and social media sharing.

“We feel that money should never be the reason for someone not being able to enjoy comics. We love the medium of comics, and want to be able to share it with anyone interested”, says CEO Jordan Plosky. “By creating different price points, we can appeal to a larger audience, and their needs.”
