That is how I saw Amica Endurae too, or at least, the noncommital polyamory part. The gender specific elements never crossed my mind, I'll admit, I just went with the connection between people involved in the relationship 'ceremony'.
Still, must suck to be Skids. Not only because he's dead, but he also realised he was one of many valued by the one character he thought he had a single thing with. More on his story might've explored that relationship further.
In the meantime, let us all cry.
