So... Ghostbusters

You probably have heard of the all female Ghostbusters remake Sony is planing to make. So instead of the GB3 movie Akroyd wanted to make that would have had the old team act as mentors to a new team, and set up GB franchises (in universe, think of MCDonnald's) set up around the World, Sony decided to scrap that, start over but have it all female to look like they're progressive.
Fine.
But that's not all, now they announced that they're planing a movie with an all male cast, and that Akroyd is now in charge of a project thats' supposed to set up Ghostbusters as the next Avengers styled shared universe. This is just stupid.

What's next? An all black team? An all white team? An all Chinese team? An all gay team?

I mean, apart from the Marvel styled shared universe everyone is trying to copy (Sony alone is planning 4 now), why do the teams have to be gender specific?

I still like Akroyd's original plan better, that way we'd get 80s nostalgia, already have a basis set up and get a meaning full passing the torch effect. You know, similar to how Extreme Ghostbusters was. That show was awesome, it had call backs to the old series and team, while establishing the new team as their own brilliant beast.

This way it just feels weird and wrong, kinda disingenuous.

If GB3 was gonna happen, it should have happened a long time ago. Without Harold Ramis it wouldn't be the same. As for an all-girl version, I have no problem with the concept, I just wish they cast different actresses than who we got. Melissa McCarthy is OK, the others? Meh.

It's all a bad idea. You can't remake Ghostbusters, and it doesn't matter what cast you use. GB only worked because of the original cast. Bill Murry, dan Ackroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harrold Ramis, Anne Potts, Rick Moranis, Signory Weaver, the dude with no dick. That group was special, and they made something special. The cartoon worked because it was a different beast altogether, but even it kept the same characters.

Going with any of these new movies would be worse than Stifler's Dukes of Hazzard.

I remember posting something similar to this in the comic section. Corporations pushing a narrative to appear progressive. Change the setting to the comic book universe and you get this type of GL, this type of Batwoman, this type of Northstar, this type of Avengers etc. All catering to hot button issues at the cost of sacrificing the story. It cheapens the cause they are trying to champion. Iirc a concentrated burst of methane gas called that post ignorant.

Deadmetal. You just hit the bullseye! Given how Sony mucked up Sam Raimi's Spiderman #3. Are they then gonna put out a GB team with one male dispatcher this time? Jeez!

When I was a kid I loved ghost busters and everything with it (comics, toys, cartoon, my mum even made a Halloween outfit for me based on Venkman)

I also loved extreme ghost busters and was a little disappointed that it just fell off the way side.

The idea of a third film always intrigued me, how were they going to top the last two, was there any new ground left to explore, etc.

Flash forward to now.

I don't understand the mentality or official reasoning behind an all girl reboot (i would of been open to a film set in the same universe, as someone already pointed out, If they say it as a franchise in another city or country). If this is just an attempt to cash in on "girl power"mk2 then it's terribly forced. If this was a completely new idea then i would of welcomed it but it's instead killing two birds with one stone, not in a good way. Then there is the expanded universe idea, sowing seeds of future films, this worked for marvel and in theory should work for DC, but they are comic franchises first and foremost so it makes sense. Ghost busters? It just reeks of money grabbing.

I guess I'll remain some optimism, it may still be a good movie but there will always be that taste my mouth as to the motives behind the movies production

I always thought passing the mantle to Oscar was the only way to go. With the passing of Harold Ramis I thought they could have opened GB3 with Egon's funeral or wake just to get the old gang together one last time and then segue to ghost stuff happening. Ray would then help Oscar put a new team together (with a girl for Oscar to show interest in and outsmart him, maybe split the team in half, two guys, two girls) and we get a new team for a new generation. Simple. But we are talking about Sony, so... :BANG_HEAD:

IMHO, let the franchise die out, I get that the original idea for Ghostbuster's 3 was to set up a younger team, probably under the tutelage of the original team, so that Ghostbuster agencies could start up all over the world, thus opening the door to more sequels. But the idea of a all female cast reboot? Not being sexist here, but blech!

It just feels like they are going to make a parody of a comedy. How often do these things work? If it gets good reviews I'll see it, but I have no expectations.

I saw the set photos I don't like their "Ecto-1" much it looks like it's actually a Hearse where as the original one was more like a Medical Examiners Ambulance.

What I mean is it's the sort of vehicle used to recover dead bodies not the sort to take coffins to Burial - the new Movie seems to have the latter type.

I know why they are doing it as it did look odd that Ecto-1 was the same vehicles used in Quincy MD but to be honest the Ambulance body is just better looking than the Hearse variant is.

In a way I'd almost wish they'd mixed it up a bit and had a VW Bug as the 'Ghost-Mobile' as well and then bring in Ecto-1 for the finale.

There is something they could put in I guess that some have always wanted to see like how the containment grid was built or show the Particle beams being tested.

You could even try variation on the gear like say a jumping trap, or pulse beam throwers etc.. (various things from Ghostbusters Videogames).

If there is something "cool" beyond 4 people being daft with some ghosts then it will seem just like a retread.

I just hope it's not another Pixels... That would be such a shame as if it doesn't suck it could make decent money - but is there many people around these days who could even make a Ghostbusters Movie that is good - the cartoon showed that other stories can be told in that Universe and told well - so I hope that it's possible sometime - but I think modern sensibilities might not be compatible with doing it properly in a way that will last 30 years+ in peoples hearts or able to gain new fans all the time like the original has.

I'm cool with an all female cast as long as we get some decent fan service

With regards to this film what would you class as fan service? A lot of homages to the first two movies? Or just the girls in their underwear?

I think Ghostbusters has huge potential, but the original set the bar so high I doubt audiences will give a movie that deviates from it a fair chance. There are countless religions and historic events to draw inspiration from. Instead of movies I'd like to see a TV series, maybe with spinoffs set in different cities like Law and Order or CSI.

I'm just ticked they couldn't get their acts together to give us Ghost Busters 3 for 2012. There were so many bad movies because of that Mayan calendar nonsense (the calendar stopped because they cannibalized the people who made it, duh), and GB could have been the one bright light to save us all.

A TV show would be cool. Better than a movie reboot or sequel at this point. But it would probably end up on Netflix or HBO or some other pay service as I doubt any networks want the brand and I don't think we want a CW version (besides, they have Supernatural).

Isn't there a scene where you see the "Boys" in their Boxer shorts when the alarm goes off in the original is that "Fan Service" then ?

If anyone gets their kit off I expect it will be Chris Hemsworth as he's 'prettier' (so to speak).

I'm sure the girls will swoon at some middle aged men's knees.

That said speaking of "Fan service" in the Pervy Japanese sense of the term... that whole Stantz gets pleasured by a lady ghost bit is very much under that heading.

I don't think that's correct. Fan service isn't sexual activity itself, it's showing off a character in a sexual manner. Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

Keith Russell defines fan service as "the random and gratuitous display of a series of anticipated gestures common in Manga and Anime. These gestures include such things as panty shots, leg spreads and glimpses of breast". Russell regards fan service as being an aesthetic of the transient "glimpse", which he contrasts with the gaze, as it takes the mind unaware and open to "libidinous possibility" without mediation. He considers the fan service object to be reassuring in its unrealistic nature and to be confirming the "freedom of desire".

For guys its upskirts, jiggling and the like. For girls its tops off, accidental or intentional male kissing and the like. I think we're talking first and second base at most for physical contact. The Ray scene went further than that (third base), so maybe that should be part of the definition of American fan service?
