When I talked to Ehren Kruger about writing Transformers films for Michael Bay, he commented that there were times the work was more like writing a Cirque du Soleil show than writing a movie. Now Kruger will have a chance to work in a literal circus setting, at least for some scenes. He’s been tapped to script a Dumbo live-action remake for Disney. In fact, Kruger is producing the film for Disney, with Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion). We have a few more details below.

Disney is betting that the man to make you believe an elephant can fly is Tim Burton.

The filmmaker behind “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,” “Batman,” “Big Eyes” and “Alice in Wonderland” will direct Disney’s coming live-action remake of “Dumbo,” Walt Disney Pictures president of production Sean Bailey said.

“Dumbo,” which is still in development and doesn’t have a release date, is one of a number of new films based on Disney animated classics that the studio has in the works, including this week’s “Cinderella,” next year’s “The Jungle Book” and “Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass,” and a new “Beauty and the Beast” expected in 2017.

Nope. Tim Burton is creepy and weird, and there is nothing creepy and weird about an elephant with giant ears, that can fly.

And some people say Bay rapes childhoods... I saw this earlier and just shook my head. Needless to say, PASS.

The stellar dialogue of Tron: Legacy, the masterful plotlines of the Transformers, the child-friendly cuddliness of Beetlejuice. Yeah, this'll definitely work.

I wonder if he'll have the racist crows in it.

Those used to be my favourite characters and part of the film when I was little. Now they leave this sour taste and confusion now that I understand the racism behind them...

Wow, this sounds like it will utterly bomb, are we sure this is a real movie and not a parody like that recent hyper mature Power Rangers fan film?

Well the pink elephants scene is going to be handled well...and that's about it. Given how Burton handled the Charlie and the chocolate factory remake, dumbo will have a subplot where he looks for his father and visits very creepy storks.

I think the "live-action" is more damning than anything else, but it's crazy there's at least 4 separate damning things about this ("remake", "Kruger", and "modern Burton").

My feelings exactly.
