I've been doing minor customs for a few years, which I'll probably start posting pics of as soon as I get a digital camera...which could be a whole vorn from now. Just completed General Ghyric and a Rodimus Primal made of 2 $10 bootleg Op-Ops, but mostly repaint Vehicons and Big Lots KOs into minions of the G2 Cybetronian army.
Naturally, that works best if my base figs are as light as possible, and because I'm not dedicated enough to invest in an airbrush (yet) much of what I paint contracts wear/flaking problems. Some of that can be rationalized in the character's bio, and I'm getting better with sealer, but overall I've had MUCH better luck with parts I've dyed using Rit and acetone instead.
However, there are some figs made up of such dark plastic that they can't be recolored this way. And, I've noticed Michael's carries one type of dye that supposedly acts as bleach. No idea just how well that works with fabric, let alone what it'd do to plastic. I could just learn through trial and error (as I did about how letting parts set in the pan without suspending them will warp them into unusable garbage), but there must be someone on these boards who's at least heard of this being done. If I were to try fading a BM deluxe Jetstorm so I could later dye him teal or green, or even make the yellow parts white, how would you recommend going about that?
And yes, I know how dangerous boiling any solution with acetone in it can be. I always keep a box of baking soda handy, have never needed to use it in over half a dozen pots of dye.
